SUPPORT THE BOWDITCH HOUSE RESTORATION

The Nataniel Bowditch House at its original location on Essex Street.

Christmas in Salem is the primary source of funds for Historic Salem’s renovation of this National Historic Landmark at 9 North Street.  The Bowditch House has played many roles in the life of the city, but currently serves as HSI’s headquarters.  The house, along with the Judge Corwin “Witch House” on Essex Street, was one of the first properties preserved by HSI over 65 years ago.  For more about the history of the Bowditch House, click here.

Nearly 10 years ago the exterior was restored, and funds from the 2010 Christmas in Salem “North Fields Tour” allowed for the recent completion of phase one of the interior renovation of the Bowditch house.  This work included replacing the 60-year-old furnace with an energy-efficient natural gas system and restoring the Federal-style main entry hallway and stair.  Up next is a painstaking restoration of the oak flooring, plaster walls and ceilings, along with the wood trim and fine detailing in the two rooms used by Historic Salem, Inc. as office and meeting space.  A permanent display interpreting the legacy of Nathaniel Bowditch is also planned. The final project in phase two will be the renovation of the bathrooms throughout the building.

When scheduled renovations are complete, Historic Salem, Inc. will not only have preserved the structure of the building, but also increased HSI’s ability to implement its mission of preservation, education, and advocacy.  Renovations will also make possible the continued leasing of upgraded office space on the second and third floors to underwrite building maintenance expenses.
