Mini Food Tour & Tasting • 6 & 7 pm
Mincemeat pie, plum pudding, and more! Step back in time and learn about Christmas holiday food from the 1800s and more with Salem Food Tours’ Karen Scalia. You’ll walk from the Gables to Pickering Wharf, enjoying a treat from Ye Olde Pepper Candy Companie, the oldest candy shop in the United States, and finish with spices and warm cider at the new Salem Spice. Two departure times of 6pm sharp and 7pm sharp at the Gables.

Salem History Meet-Up • 8 pm–10pm Salem Waterfront Hotel, 225 Derby Street
Join the Salem Historical Society and other history lovers and professionals for our first ever Salem History meet-up. Enjoy the cash bar and complimentary hot chocolate, meet other history buffs, and ring in the holiday season.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 1st

Salem Garden Club Boutique • 9:30 am–4 pm Tour Headquarters, The House of the Seven Gables, AV Room
Visit the Salem Garden Club boutique to purchase uniquely decorated natural wreaths, sprays, arrangements, and much more. Please note: the boutique will only run on Saturday
of Christmas in Salem weekend this season, NOT Sunday.

Ye Olde Pepper Candy Companie Holiday Open House 2018 • 11 am–5 pm Ye Olde Pepper Candy Companie, 122 Derby Street
Join us for our annual Holiday Open House, where you can see cheery Christmas elves making our delicious old fashioned candy canes. Periodically throughout the day we’ll be letting our guests into the kitchen to see how the candy canes are made, and to twist some up themselves. Our founder, Mrs. Mary Spencer, will once more be time traveling from the year 1806 to greet our guests, answer questions about our company’s unique history, and serve refreshments.

Nathaniel Hawthorne and Utopia—a lecture by Salem Historical Society’s David Moffat • 1 pm & 2:30 pm Hooper-Hathaway House, The House of the Seven Gables, 115 Derby Street
Nathaniel Hawthorne lived during a period of diverse Utopian projects and he himself
played a brief part in the creation of the community at Brook Farm. Learn about
Hawthorne’s relationship with the social idealism of his day and its impact on his
writing. Seating is limited and first-come, first-served.

Hawthorne Hotel History Tours • 2:30 & 4:30 pm Hawthorne Hotel, 18 Washington Square West
Take a journey from 1925 to the present day during a half-hour tour of the historic Hawthorne Hotel, named in honor of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Enjoy hot cider and holiday treats in the Lobby.

Herbal Candle Co. Holiday Pop-Up • 11 am–4:30 pm The House of the Seven Gables, 115 Derby Street
Join us for our first holiday pop-up! We will be debuting a new limited edition scent in our History by the Sea Collection, “Christmas in Salem,” an essential oil blend of orange, cinnamon, and clove. A portion of our proceeds will benefit Historic Salem, Inc. and The House of the Seven Gables.

The Spirit of Christmas Past: Four Centuries of Christmas in New England–a lecture by Historic New England’s Ken Turino • 1 pm AV Room, The House of the Seven Gables, 115 Derby Street
This engaging lecture spans four centuries, from the time Christmas was outlawed in seventeenth-century New England, to the twenty-first century, when all of the familiar holiday traditions were in place. During this presentation, you will discover how Christmas has evolved from non-observance into the festive holiday that we know today.
