Caroline Emmerton, a philanthropist and preservationist, purchased the House of the Seven Gables in 1908 and worked with a leading preservationist architect, Joseph Everett Chandler, to restore the house to its original seven gables. Her goals were to preserve the house for future generations, to provide educational opportunities for visits and to use the proceeds from this house to fund her settlement programs for immigrant families. The House of the Seven Gables’ campus, which now includes five additional 17th, 18th, and 19th century structures, is now registered as a National Landmark.
